Are you Ready?

MAGNUM Baits USA

Baby, it's cold outside! As I write this, most of the country is facing sub-freezing temperatures. From Bend, OR (29 degrees) to Durham, NC, (31 degrees), it's frigid. So, for those of us who don't live in California, Texas, or Florida, we're only dreaming of fishing right now.

As we wait for warmer temperatures and open water, we're typically getting ready for that first cast of the year. Whether it's cleaning reels, prepping rods, or organizing tackle, winter-time is all about patience, and looking forward to that first fishing trip of springtime.
But when the time comes, what will you throw? In the midwest, for example, the time after ice-out is typically the time for a jig. It's a perfect presentation for sluggish largemouth; slow, precise, and compact.
A jig is one of those old-school, trusted lures that just catches fish. And that's the case for nearly everywhere, on any body of water.
The jig is perhaps the most widely used, big-fish catching artificial tool in a good fisherman's arsenal - no matter where you live, or even the time of year - but that's another article  for another time.
Back to our frigid water temperatures.
Today, there are just about as many jig styles as there are jig colors. Of them all, it's hard to beat a football jig for cold-water effectiveness. That distinctive egg-shaped head just does something to a bass.
Whether it's the way it imitates a crayfish, or they way it slowly plows across the bottom, the football jig produces bites. Especially in springtime.
